Parking attendants might patrol the streets of Colchester into the early hours.
In a move designed to help night-time traffic flow and bus routes, the parking attendants might even start joint patrols with police officers to ensure the attendants' "health and safety" as they ticket cars late at night.
At present, the parking attendants knock off at 8pm. Under the new plans they might work through until as late as 2am, noting parking violations throughout the town centre.
Speaking on Thursday, Peter Carrington, the council's community safety co-ordinator, said: "We need parking attendants to work much later into the evening.
He also said "open" talks were being held with the police on the issue. The only possible hold-back could be staffing problems. "If we take them off in the morning to go on in the evening then obviously they are not around earlier in the day. It is an issue we are in discussion on."
