Residents battling a "dangerous" pedestrian crossing outside the multi-million pound Virgin Active leisure centre today demanded speed cameras are introduced in the area.
Residents were furious when Castle Point Council refused to bow to pressure from Sir Richard Branson to move the crossing from outside the complex.
Officers decided simply to lower the speed limit along Thundersley's busy Rayleigh Road from 40mph to 30mph.
However, despite their defeat, campaigners are still hoping other measures will be taken to make the area safer.
Maureen Maley, who lives opposite the luxury complex which opens next week, said: "It is a very busy road.
"I am a pedestrian and I am apprehensive about using the pedestrian crossing. It is very dangerous."
John Waugh, borough secretary at Castle Point Council, said: "This matter will be raised with the director of technical services and thought will be given to making people aware of the change."
