Southend United progressed to the southern final of the LDV Vans Trophy at Roots Hall last night - thrashing Second Division QPR 4-0 in a pleasing performance which made a mockery of their lowly league position.
Up against an in-form side who look set to be promoted in May, the Shrimpers produced a vastly improved display and fully deserved to seal their first success since Boxing Day.
And leading the way for the victorious Seasiders were two unlikely heroes, as Drewe Broughton and Steven Clark both netted well-taken strikes to cap vastly improved displays for the heavily-criticised duo.
Clark raced onto a fantastic pass from Mark Gower to curl home a clinical 16-yard shot and the Shrimpers faithful will now be hoping to see the best of the speedy winger on a more consistent basis.
The former West Ham United youngster, who joined Southend back in November 2001, undoubtedly has the pace and skill to become a real asset for the Blues -- especially against opposing Division Three full backs.
But, last night's eye catching display was Clark's first start of the season, after enduring a miserable few months out of the Roots Hall reckoning.
But the improving winger, who was even sent out on loan to Macclesfield Town in September, is finally back in the Blues first team and his often low confidence must surely have been lifted by his brilliant display against Ian Holloway's men.
And striker Drewe Broughton also starred during last night's unexpected triumph - netting twice in the second half as the Shrimpers equalled their biggest win of the season.
