Barstable School in Timberlog Close, Basildon, is the only school in Essex believed to have taken the step.

Head Jonathan Oddy said: "We have withdrawn salt from the dining room. Whether you are a member of staff or a pupil, you cannot put salt on your food.

"In this area, heart disease and coronary disease are very common and we consider one of our general community responsibilities is to work towards a healthy population."
