Residents in Gifford Green, Pitsea, are taking on London and Cambridge Properties over their latest planning application for 29 flats on land behind their homes.
They are concerned about the impact the changes will have on the environment and the safety of residents and school children.
Gifford Green resident Barbara Harris, 61 said: "LCP don't live with the people, they haven't a clue how the plans will affect us."
The area off Wickford Avenue, between Gifford Green and the Dibble Centre, amounts to less than an acre.
London and Cambridge Properties have proposed building four blocks comprising of 29 flats, with a children's play area, parking for residents and a new entrance road.
There was nobody available from LCP to comment today.
