A 13-year-old boy was seriously injured when his bike was in a collision with a car.
The incident happened where the A120 meets the A12 slip road at Marks Tey.
A blue Peugeot 206 car, driven by a 67-year-old Colchester man, was travelling on to the A12 from the A120 when the accident happened at the top of the slip road.
A police spokesperson said the boy, from Marks Tey, received serious head and leg injuries.
He was in a "serious but stable" condition in Colchester General Hospital's high dependency unit.
The spokesperson said the boy, who had two broken bones in his legs, was due to undergo an operation on Saturday. Yesterday his condition was said to be stable.
The driver of the car and his 61-year-old wife, who was a passenger, were said to be shocked but uninjured.
Police are appealing for witnesses to the collision, which happened at about 4.35pm on Friday.
