A blueprint for 800 homes and a business development on Thorpe Hall Golf Club is to be revealed soon, a protest group warned today.
Greenkeeper was set up in 1998 when plans were first suggested for the green lung in the heart of Thorpe Bay.
Now the group claims the land's owners, property developers Brightstar, a consortium of Southend development companies Robert Leonard Group and Regis Group, are poised to submit a formal planning application.
It will include "at least 500 and possibly up to 800 homes and commercial premises" on the site of the course.
Thorpe Hall Golf Club has a long history of being one of the most exclusive in the area.
According to Greenkeeper, the club's members will soon be asked by Brightstar to give up the lease in exchange for a new course in the Bournes Green Chase area.
However Gary Smith, secretary and business manager of the golf club, said: "I am aware of the latest letter from Greenkeeper, but I have had no communications from our landlords since last year.
"No offer has been put to us at the moment by the owners and any decision to surrender our lease would have to be made by a 75 per cent majority of the members."
