Calls for a drastic speed limit cut on a busy road running through a quiet village have been stepped up after a series of accidents.

Caroly Mann, chairwoman of Faulkbourne Against Speeding Traffic, believes the speed limit on the road between Witham and Faulkbourne should be reduced from 60mph to 40mph.

Miss Mann, who lives by the road, voiced her concerns after an accident on the road on Wednesday at 7.30am involving two cars, leaving one driver with slight injuries and blocking the road for almost an hour.

Although the cause of the collision is not known, it is the latest in a catalogue of accidents on the road in the past few months.

In November, a driver escaped injury after losing control of the Toyota two-seater he was driving and collided with a gate.

Faulkbourne lies on the secondary road between Braintree and Witham.

Traffic police have long been concerned about the accident rate on the road, and a police survey last year identified four sites where clusters of accidents took place, including the stretch where the residents want the speed limit reduced.

But Essex County Council said its guidelines prevented the speed limit being reduced as it is not a built-up area.
