Police had to take evasive action when a man high on a cocktail of drink and drugs threatened them with an axe handle and a knife.
Two police officers went to the flat of 31-year-old David Lane in Kursaal Way, Southend, following reports someone may have been held prisoner, Southend Court heard.
Lane threatened police with a wooden axe handle. As police tried to get in Lane grabbed a large knife and ran at the officers.
One quick-thinking officer slammed the flat door shut as Lane tried to get at them, and they kept Lane locked in while they waited for backup.
Lane, who admitted using threatening and abusive behaviour, was jailed for two months.
