Major expansion would take place at Southend Airport, if Castle Point councillors had their way.
Members of the planning committee have backed the growth of the airport, while continuing to oppose the proposed expansion at Stansted.
In the past borough councillors didn't want any airport expansion, but at last night's meeting they changed their minds as they thrashed out the Government's White Paper on Air Transport, which focuses on another runway at Stansted.
Mayor Chris Freeman (Con, Boyce) said: "We still have a recommendation from this council that this authority objects to any expansion to any airport, especially in the South East.
"I would like to see that rescinded because I think that now we have a new administration in this council we should put our own views across.
"Our airports are our lifeline.
"Passengers want to travel. I know Southend carries mostly freight at the moment but I would like to see it carrying more passengers."
Pam Challis (Con, St Peter's) said: "I welcome future plans for Southend that are crucial to the Southend area and safeguarding jobs."
