A new zero-tolerance war is being waged against flyposting in Colchester.
Colchester Council is now threatening to prosecute businesses that put fliers up around the town.
Nightclubs or pubs that have fliers dotted about the town face a tough grilling when they come to try to renew their entertainments licence.
Flyposting, in which fliers are put up on shop windows, walls, lampposts and other street furniture, has been homed in on by the council for the past six months.
And street chiefs claim talks with shops and night venues have already yielded results.
Dave McManus, waste and transport manager at the council, said the number of fliers dotted around the town had been halved in the past half-year.
But, he said, it does not end there. He said now that the council had gone out and spoken with traders and licensees in the town, any future flyposting would be met with zero-tolerance.
He said: "Already the number of fliers has been reduced considerably. But we also prepared to prosecute over this as well to make sure it isn't done any more."
