Police were called into the Layer Road ground after a touchline confrontation between Accrington management and stewards who were escorting referee Phil Joslin towards the players' tunnel.

Coleman admitted to being angry at having a tenth-minute goal ruled out and strong appeals for a penalty waved away, but strongly denied any involvement in a scuffle.

He said: "I have never been involved in anything like it before in all my years in football."

And the Liverpool primary school teacher added: "I will definitely be speaking to the police about it."

Coleman, who described his team's disallowed goal and ruled-out appeals for a penalty as 'a double whammy,' confirmed that the referee had banished him to the main stand for the second half of the match.

Referee Joslin was unavailable for comment.
