Graduates of Thurrock Trade School's first course received their awards from mayor Gerard Rice.
The 25 youngsters, all aged between 15 and 16 and from six Thurrock schools, attended the 12-week course which was aimed at developing practical skills in bricklaying, electrical, plumbing and carpentry.
The course was launched in September at Thurrock Council's Curzon Drive depot in Grays.
Current and retired council tradesmen and women and one from PRG - a private contractor - acted as trainers.
The pilot scheme was part of the council's local business initiative, and a co-operation between the council and the local business community organisations, including the Thurrock District Association of Industries, which is committed to training the local population and gving young people a good start in life.
