Much needed affordable housing is on the cards for residents in Stock, who would otherwise be forced to leave the village.

The Rural Housing Trust has been in talks with Stock Parish Council to build eight houses which will be closed to the open market and will be reserved for villagers.

The trust was set up in 1976 and aims to provide housing for local people who cannot afford to buy or rent accommodation in their village because of increased housing prices.

In April 2002, a housing needs survey was sent to every home in Stock and residents were urged to give their views. The survey results showed there was a need for affordable housing.

The Rural Housing Trust has provided similar schemes in more than 270 villages across the country and it is now urging Stock residents to register their interest in a housing scheme.

Area programme manager, Anne Bishop, said: "Some people want to get onto the housing ladder but find it difficult in the open market - and that is where we can help.

"Youngsters often can't afford to leave home because of the increased housing prices in their village. But it's not just for young people, it is for any local residents who can't afford open market prices.

"The trust responded to the invitation of the parish council who are concerned about affordable housing for local people in their village.

"We carried out a survey which found that there was a need for a small housing scheme."

Chairman of Stock Parish Council, Sally Johnson, said: "The plans are very exciting and it will be fantastic if it goes ahead."
