Basildon Zoo owner Yolande Surcouf was today fearing for the future of three horses stolen in a break-in.
The raiders took miniatures Rosie and Moonshine and oversize Crystal from Basildon Zoo after sawing through gates and two fences to get in.
Mrs Surcouf says it is the third burglary in months and has spoken of her fears of the horses being turned into "dog meat".
Mrs Surcouf said: "This time the thieves have sawn through gates and two fences including one electric fence. This is the third break-in in months and nobody seems able to do anything. I feel so heartbroken."
Basildon police are appealing for witnesses to the theft between January 9 and 10 to contact them on 01268 532212.
