Motorists have the chance to banish speed cameras in the Maldon district if they feel they are in the wrong place.

At a recent House of Commons debate, Maldon and East Chelmsford MP John Whittingdale claimed some of the devices had been placed purely to bring in cash for the Government, rather than in the interests of safety.

He then called for residents to tell him if they think a camera in the district has been wrongly placed.

The invitation came after David Jamieson, Parliamentary under secretary for transport, announced that if the location of any one of the devices can be shown not to meet the safety case, he will have it removed.

Mr Whittingdale told fellow MPs there are now 82 fixed speed cameras in Essex, and the amount raised in penalty charges in 2001 was already more than £3.5 million.
