A seriously-injured driver had to be cut free by firefighters after a three-car accident.
The section of the A133 at Clacton was closed to traffic for two hours after the crash.
The man, who suffered leg injuries, was taken to Colchester General Hospital.
The accident happened at about 4pm yesterday as he was driving his Suzuki car between Bovills Road and Clacton fire station on the bypass.
Two cars coming the other way were also involved in the collision - a Ford Sierra Cosworth and a Vauxhall.
Several other occupants of the two cars suffered minor injuries but were not taken to hospital.
