Plans for a new shop at Wivenhoe have been thrown out by councillors after fears over traffic chaos.
Edward Gittins and Associates had applied for permission to build a retail unit to join a parade of shops at Vine Parade in Wivenhoe.
Wivenhoe Town Council had expressed concern over parking at the site.
Colchester Council also received more than 40 letters objecting, including fears over the bad and dangerous traffic problem already in Vine Road/Vine Drive, including a fatality.
Mr Gittins told the planning committee that since the application, it had been decided that Moss Pharmacy would expand into the extension.
He added that there was a shoppers' car park at the rear of the Londis store, and that an expanded pharmacy would be of benefit.
But councillors at the planning meeting shared the concerns over the amount of traffic at the site.
