Some services between Shoebury and Fenchurch Street had to be cancelled in the morning rush-hour, with buses replacing trains between Pitsea and Upminster.

Other services were delayed for up to an hour because of the engineering work and overhead line damage.

A troubled morning worsened when a train broke down and blocked the line at Pitsea, causing all services between Shoebury and Fenchurch Street to be suspended for 30 minutes.

Passengers waiting at Southend Central station were advised to use the First Great Eastern line to London Liverpool Street.

A c2c spokesman said: "A train broke down at Pitsea at 8.20am and blocked trains until 9.10am. Passengers were advised to go to Southend Victoria where their tickets were valid."

Graham Bashford, also of c2c, added: "This morning's delays are all to do with overrunning engineering works. The works were supposed to be completed during the night, but were then delayed until 8.15am. They have since been put forward again."

c2c also warned that services for tonight's rush-hour could be disrupted after severe weather, including torrential rain and high winds, was forecast for south Essex.
