Colchester were heading for a welcome three points until this low key encounter suddenly exploded into drama and controversy 11 minutes from the end
The U's were leading at that point thanks to a 25th minute goal from joint top scorer Wayne Andrews, who cashed in on a dreadful blunder from The Tykes keeper Sasa Ilic.
But Barnsley marksman Kevin Betsy hit a 79th minute equaliser and moments later was then right in the centre of a dubious passage of play which led to a very questionable red card for U's utilty man Karl Duguid for an alleged professional foul.
