High-profile measures to tackle anti-social behaviour are being considered for the Braintree district

Braintree Council wants to create a team of street wardens to be its "eyes and ears" and enforce its powers, by working with parish and town councils and other local groups.

A sum of £261,000 could be spent on the new initiatives.

The suggestions involve housing estate rangers, estate managers, inspectors and other council staff wearing street warden uniforms and carrying out more activities to counter anti-social behaviour.

Parking attendants could be badged as street wardens too, and there could be high visibility, branded vehicles.

It has also been suggested that cash be used for four extra police community support officers, two funded by the council and two by Essex Police.

Braintree Council says despite efforts to improve the quality of life of residents in recent years, anti-social behaviour and fear of crime are still high on the list of priorities.

Proposals will be considered by the executive tonight
