Basildon Hospital's accident and emergency department is to undergo an £8.5million expansion and modernisation.

Another storey is likely to be built on top and an eight-bed observation ward is also planned.

The work could be completed as soon as the end of next year.

Hospital bosses have also revealed for the first time that there are "firm proposals" for an extra 50 beds next year, on top of the £8.5million investment.

Basildon MP Angela Smith said the announcement was excellent news. She was "very excited" by the plans.
