A new spectator seating area and ramp are being built at Barrow Farm, the riding school for disabled people at Highwood, near Brentwood.

Work on the ambitious project started this week, and will be completed later in the month. The cost was originally estimated at around £40,000, but it is now expected to be less.

"We've been working towards this for a long, long time," said riding instructor Anne Mitchell.

However, she added, the charity still needs more money and volunteers to help it continue with its good work.

The new ramp, together with a hoist, will make it easier for disabled people to get in and out of the saddle, while the raised area for spectators will be able to hold about 60 people.

The money for the project has come from a variety of sources. One anonymous donor gave a staggering £10,000, and the Chelmsford Jubilee Fund has agreed to meet half the costs. The national lottery and the Peter Harrison Foundation each gave £5,000.

As well as money, Barrow Farm is looking for volunteers who can spare two to three hours a week or more to help out.

They must be fit and active, and comfortable around horses. Full training is given. For more information call Anne on 01277 821538.
