Are you ready for your next Deep Fix?

Deep Fix

The psychedelic rock band will play their first gig of the new year at 9pm on January 24 at the Hope and Anchor pub, Upper Street, Islington.

The five-piece band, fronted by lead guitarist Danny Brown and singer Jay West, burst onto the south Essex scene in 2003 and established themselves as one of the year's most promising acts.

Their mix of Sixties blues, northern soul and modern rock has led them to build in sounds from rock legends such as the Rolling Stones, the Byrds and Kings of Leon.

The band took some time out over Christmas to reflect on a hectic year and hatch a plan of action for 2004.

A minibus will be running from Southend to the Hope and Anchor, although times and prices have not yet been finalised.

Southend-based reggae artist Jah Free will be playing his worldly-wise sound to a home crowd on Saturday night.

The self-styled "dub activist" will play at Dreams Nightclub, Eastern Esplanade, Southend.

The Southend gig follows the release of a new CD, Unity, which sees Jah Free on fine form.

It features 17 tracks including a mixture of Jah Free's own cuts and collaborations with friends and fellow reggae artists.

Tickets for the evening, which will be showcasing the best of local roots and dub talent, cost £5.

A new rhythm and blues band will be providing entertainment from a bygone era at Churchills, Southend, on Sunday.

West Weston's newly-formed Big Rhythm play r'n'b sounds from the Forties and Fifties. The band features two saxophones, boogie-woogie piano, guitar, harmonica, double bass and drums.

The band are the newest recruits to play at Churchills's thriving jazz club. Music starts at 1pm and admission costs £4.
