Amy Goldring, a 17-year-old student at Witham Sixth Form Centre at John Bramston College, in Spinks Lane, is raising the money for the Project Trust charity, which will take her abroad to teach English to Thai school children for a year.
Miss Goldring, the college's student president, decided she wanted to go to Thailand after developing a love of Thai culture.
As well as an interest in Buddhism and eastern philosophy, she has trained at the Witham Mui Thai Academy and boxes regularly with the Colchester Champions pro boxing club.
She said: "Having been born and bred in Witham, I have decided that between completing my sixth form studies and starting university, I should give something back and teaching English in Thailand was a very appealing choice."
After receiving the news she had won her place on the scheme, Miss Goldring began fundraising immediately.
