There are no longer any homeless families left in bed and breakfast accommodation in Castle Point, council chiefs said today.

The council's target to have no homeless families left in bed and breakfast accommodation by March this year has been achieved, director of health and housing Alan Longford said.

He added: "We are pleased we are able to comply with the initiative which has worked well and we are doing our best to house families in suitable accommodation.

"Families have benefited from the private leasing initiative and we have also moved a number of families into council properties.

"We will try to maintain the target by careful planning and trying to second guess how many homeless people will come to our door. At the moment there are no families with children in bed and breakfast accommodation."

The council is under strict instructions from Government not to home families with children in B&Bs, although individual vulnerable people could still be placed in the accommodation.
