Steve Tilson could be in for an extended run in the Southend United hotseat after impressing as caretaker-chief.

The former midfielder has helped revitalise the struggling Shrimpers during his short time at the helm and club co-owner Ron Martin has been impressed with his efforts.

"We've no plans to change what seems to be a winning formula of Steve Tilson and Paul Brush at the moment," said Martin.

"They're doing well and will be in charge for a little while longer.

"We don't want to disrupt things - especially at this important time of the season when we have a number of games in quite a short space of time."

Thirty-seven-year-old Tilson has won five of his nine games as boss - helping the Blues progress in both the FA Cup and the LDV Vans Trophy.

As a result, Martin was quick to confirm that whatever happens with the long-term manager's position, Wickford-born Tilson would continue to play a major role in the future of the club and could also have funds to strengthen his small Shrimpers squad.

"It's very important that Steve Tilson has a role in any coaching staff at Southend United, but it could be a little premature for him to be manager at the moment," said Martin.
