A Victorian church in a remote village could become an important meeting and entertainment venue thanks to an inspired initiative by its pastor and worshippers.
Having looked at the under-used meeting spaces available at Tollesbury Congregational Church and its adjoining Manse, Pastor Phil Grove decided non-church members throughout the Maldon area and beyond should be able to make use of the buildings.
Apart from Sunday worship the church, on the corner of East Street and Station Road, is currently used by a youth club, toddler and pre-school groups, the Women's Fellowship, the Silver Threads, the Men's Supper Club, Holiday Club and for charity concerts.
But with its schoolroom, upper room and the old Manse as well as the main church building, there is capacity for two or more events to take place simultaneously, said Mr Grove.
In October 1,150 questionnaires inviting suggestions for additional uses were put through every letterbox in Tollesbury plus some in nearby villages and Maldon District Council's offices and Mr Grove was delighted to receive an 11.3 per cent response.
Now the replies have been analysed, the results published and new attractions including twice-weekly watercolour classes, a homework club, the Tollesbury Amateur Players' Wednesday meetings and a Booktalk group have been accommodated at the church.
