Castle Point's MP Bob Spink has thrown himself into the votes at 16 campaign urging the Electoral Commission to be "brave and innovative".

The Tory MP spoke before the House of Commons Electoral Commission committee yesterday, as the debate into voting at 16 rose into the spotlight.

Mr Spink told MPs: "Opinion is mixed on this issue, even among youngsters themselves.

"Please urge the commission to be brave and innovative in its response to this consultation and give a message to young people that we are prepared to trust them and listen to them even at 16."

MP Peter Viggers answering questions on behalf of the commission confirmed the report would be published by Friday April 9.
