A pilot scheme launched in mid Essex which uses the internet to encourage younger people to read books is to be used elsewhere.
The scheme was trialled in mid Essex after Dr Margaret Keeling, head of libraries information heritage and cultural services group at Essex County Council, revealed the downturn in library use among the under 55s.
The mid Essex area was one of the first to introduce the project, which could lead to entire volumes of books available to read over the internet.
Library members would be able to log on to them via their home computer or anywhere with internet access.
The initiative was aimed at increasing the use of libraries facilities in the under 55 age group, particularly teenagers.
