The officers were driving along in West Mersea when an elderly woman stopped their police car and said she wanted them to go to her home.
Once they got there she handed them the 28 rounds of plastic blanks to take back to Colchester police station.
Det Sgt Roger Napier, of Colchester CID, said: "It's possible that it's something that has been in her loft for ages and she has been meaning to get round to getting rid of it, seen a police car and thought it was the time to get rid of it."
