A Good Samaritan has died after being hit by a car as he rushed to help the occupants of two crashed vehicles.
The 29-year-old man, from Basildon has yet to be named by police, but a man has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.
The accident took place on the M62 in Greater Manchester when a number of cars stopped following a crash between a Toyota Avensis and a Range Rover at 2am on Saturday morning.
The dead man got out of a BMW to help the occupants of the two crashed cars, one of which is believed to have burst into flames following the smash.
As he did so he was hit by a Renault Clio which had been travelling behind him.
He was taken to Hope Hospital, in Salford, where he later died as a result of his injuries.
The 21-year-old driver of the Renault was arrested at the scene of the crash and was being interviewed yesterday by Manchester Police.
