An inmate at Bullwood Hall women's prison sparked an alert after she set fire to rubbish in her cell.
Firefighters were called to the jail in Bullwood Hall Lane, Hockley, at 9.21pm on New Year's Eve after one of the inmates started a fire in her cell.
However, the blaze had already been put out by the time crews from Hawkwell and Hadleigh fire stations arrived.
A spokesman for Hadleigh fire station said: "Hawkwell went in and dealt with the fire while we waited outside.
"I understand it was only a small fire."
