For a Colchester dog lover the wait is finally over as the dog she rescued from abroad is allowed to come home.
Sue Hyett spotted Scooby while she was on holiday on the Maltese island of Gozo in May and spent the rest of 2003 trying desperately to raise enough cash to bring the abandoned pooch back to Colchester.
Now thanks to cash and supplies donated by local businesses and Evening Gazette readers, Scooby has done her time in quarantine and has been allowed home.
Mrs Hyett, of Shrub End Road, Colchester, said: "I am very excited and very, very happy, the rest of the family have been looking forward to bringing her home too."
But Mrs Hyett says she could never have done it without the help of everyone who donated cash and sent her notes of encouragement.
