Sun seekers flocking to the Tendring coast on the hottest day of the year caused gridlock in Clacton.

And traffic police predicted the chaos would continue today.

While temperatures soared into the 90s, frustrated drivers reached boiling point as they were forced to queue for up to 15 miles.

Hundreds of cars were brought to a halt on the Weeley bypass and A120, with queues stretching as far back as the Ardleigh Crown interchange.

The problems were not just confined to the main roads, with traffic in the town centre also causing long jams and desperation.
