The controversial North Hill bus lane has been scrapped and will be removed within months.
Richard Gower, cabinet member for transport at Colchester Council, has signed off the plan to remove the bus lane in Colchester and bring in a new bus prioritising scheme.
North Hill will have a speed limit of 20mph, be narrowed to two lanes, the pavement on the Sixth Form College side widened and disabled parking and loading bays provided.
Buses will be given priority through to North Hill at Middleborough with a hi-tech bus detection system. The traffic lights will automatically change to ensure buses can go straight through.
However, the plan could yet be called in by a councillor. It would then have to be looked at by the overview and scrutiny panel.
