Essex's Nasser Hussain answered his critics on Tuesday when he produced one of the finest innings of his career.

Hussain was at his brilliant best in the National League game with Glamorgan as he bludgeoned his way to 161 not out from just 147 balls to secure a 145-run triumph.

It came less than a month after the former England captain had smashed an unbeaten 144 at Cardiff, and his display earnt a standing ovation from a 4,000-strong New Writtle Street crowd.

In recording his career-best one-day score in a total of 298 for five, Hussain struck 21 fours and a six.

He so dominated an opening stand of 176 in 27 overs with Andy Flower that he completed a 91-ball century before his partner had reached 50.

Tony Palladino, with the help of two slip catches by Will Jefferson, soon had Glamorgan reeling when they replied.

The young fast bowler picked up the wickets of Robert Croft and Mike Powell in his first over with only three runs on the board.

Medium paceman Graham Napier then sprang on to the scene, taking four for 26 and so ending the Glamorgan challenge.
