More victims of crime must come forward if Castle Point's chances of getting more bobbies on the beat are to be improved, says the borough's top policeman.
Chief Supt John Mauger made his feeling clear at a meeting with two grandmothers who are battling to get Canvey police station open more hours a day.
Maggie Robbins and Maureen Campbell - both 61 - visited Mr Mauger and Chief Insp Tony Rayner at Rayleigh HQ along with Canvey councillors Ray Howard and Tony Belford.
Mr Mauger said: "Our policing levels are determined by the level of crime in the area.
"Crime is defined by the simple fact of incidents being reported to the police, so it is imperative that all crimes are reported as this will strengthen the case for increasing our numbers of police."
