A red-faced couple were forced to drive to Hadleigh fire station after the handcuffs they had put on got stuck.
The drama unfolded just after 2am when firefighters were awoken by the sound of the doorbell at the station in the High Street, Hadleigh.
Firefighter John Adams said: "We could not believe it when we opened the door to find a couple standing there sheepishly pointing at the handcuffs that linked them together. It appears the couple, "both of whom were in their mid-twenties, had put the handcuffs on while undressed.
Mr Adams said the handcuffs had become stuck after the key broke in the lock.
He said: "We were about to use our specialist cutting equipment when leading firefighter Steven Bennett managed to prise the cuffs apart. It took 20 minutes to free the embarrassed pair - who refused to be named - who thanked the firefighters and left."
