Plenty of positives but room for improvement. That's how the first report slip of the new term should read as the class of 2003/04 reassembled back at Portman Road.
Temile Omonigho's strike was the undoubted highlight of the night, a scorching 30-yard volley that whistled past helpless debutant Kelvin Davis.
Other than bemusedly picking the ball out of his net, the keeper had next to nothing to do in terms of saves, although his kicking was always confident and accurate.
Fellow new-boys Drissa Diallo and George Santos, on the other hand, were far busier and offered plenty of encouragement to boss Joe Royle.
Darren Bent and Pablo Counago squandered opportunities to sew the game up by half-time, while Jim Magilton headed wide with the goal at his mercy.
Things quietened down in the second half with Ipswich's best chance resulting in a goal for Counago.
Darren Bent crossed from the right and the Spaniard coolly took a couple of touches before rifling home from close-range
