Developers are hoping to build up to 20 affordable homes in South Woodham Ferrers, potentially helping those who have been priced out of the housing market to get a foot on the property ladder.

One-bedroom apartments that would usually sell for up to £100,000 would be offered for between £50,000 and £60,000 to single people and couples in the borough

Developers failed to secure planning permission for the scheme a month ago, but plans have now been redrawn

The borough council failed to decide the original application in its allotted eight week deadline, although it criticised the aesthetics of the building, among other things.

A spokesman for McCarthy Stone said: "We have submitted another application based on a redesign and hope that permission will be granted before the appeal is decided, which it then won't need to be."

The properties would be built, along with retirement homes, near the police station on Tylers Ride and privately funded by a partnership between Advantage Homes and developer McCarthy Stone.

John Cottingham, Advantage Homes director, believes the new properties could provide a much-needed boost for local couples who have been unable to get on to the property ladder because of the housing market boom.

The homes are being aimed at people with permanent jobs, whose salaries are insufficient to buy them a property at current market rates
