Southend West Tory MP David Amess has been told by Greenpeace activists the people of the town don't want GM crops.
The move follows a street survey carried out by campaigners in the town's High Street.
Of shoppers who were asked if they wanted food free of all genetically modified crops, 98.5 per cent of 212 people spoken to agreed, while only 1.5 per cent had no objection to GM foods.

Mr Amess accepted completed poll cards at Iveagh Hall, the Tory headquarters in Leigh Road, Leigh.
He will be asked by the local Greenpeace group to tell environment secretary Margaret Beckett about the results of the poll, which will form part of the feedback to the Government's GM public debate, taking place over the summer months.
