The youngster, who has not yet been named, was crossing Southend Road, in Billericay, with her mother when they were hit by a red Toyota sports car.
Nearly 70 touching floral tributes to the girl have already appeared at the scene as the community looks for an outlet for its grief.
One card read: "Rest easy little one." Others expressed deepest regrets and sympathy.
A note on behalf of the girl's parents thanked everyone for "all the lovely flowers and wonderful messages".
