Families campaigning to clean up one of the most overcrowded areas in Britain today vowed to reclaim their streets from flytippers.
They have launched a Stop the Rot campaign to try and save the Westborough ward in Westcliff from its downward spiral into a slum.
Westborough is now officially the most overcrowded ward in Essex and one of the most over-populated in the UK.
The increasing population has put a strain on infrastructure, causing rubbish dumping, a lack of parking and lengthy waiting lists for doctors, dentists and schools.
Chairman of the Residents' Association of Westborough (RAW), Alan Abbott, said: "This is the Cinderella ward. The council have done nothing to stop more and more flats being built on every spare inch of land.
"We need to stop development in the area until the infrastructure is im-proved."
The group is vigorously opposing further development in the area and looking at ways of tackling existing problems.
