Four people, including an 11-year-old boy, were taken to hospital after a three-car crash on the outskirts of Clacton.
The boy is believed to have suffered a broken wrist in the accident in St John's Road, near Pumphill Garage, on Saturday night.
PC Robin Rush, of Thorpe traffic unit, said three cars were involved in the incident at about 8.30pm.
"A black Ford Ka was heading towards Colchester when it was in collision with a red Volvo estate travelling in the opposite direction," he said.
"The Ka continued on and collided with a white Astra, which was also going towards Clacton."
PC Rush said traffic was held up for some time while emergency services dealt with the accident.
All three drivers were taken to hospital by ambulance along with the 11-year-old, who was a passenger in the Astra. None of the injured have been named.
Anyone with information is asked to contact PC Dave Williams at Thorpe on 01255 861455 or Stanway traffic unit on 01255 762512.
