Big-hearted runners have sprinted up £600 to help boost school funds.

Around 170 people, from teenagers to grown-ups, dug deep into their pockets to take part in the FitzWimarc School five-mile-run and raise cash for the school.

Paul Heale, a governor at the school, in Hockley Road, Rayleigh, and a member of the Parent Teacher Association, was delighted.

He said: "We had about 170 runners and out of those 160 finished the course which was great.

"People had to pay to enter the race which makes it even more of a surprise that so many people entered.

"I am absolutely delighted with how well the day went. The weather was perfect and we raised £600."

Cash raised went on cups and trophies for the winners as well as towards school funds and everyone who took part got a commemorative mug.
