The pong which has been getting up the noses of residents for months has finally disappeared, the Environment Agency claims.
Meanwhile, a new draft independent report has revealed the concentration of potentially harmful substances in the air is not high enough to be a cause for concern.
People in Castle Point have had to put up with the stink from Cleanaway landfill site in Pitsea for months - but the Environment Agency has now worked out exactly where it is coming from.
The smell has been traced to two sources within the site and the agency says it has made "extensive efforts" to solve the problem.
A spokesman said: "The majority of the engineering works necessary have now been completed, resulting in a virtual end to the noxious odours."
