A Witham company will be among the first to know what number shirt David Beckham will be wearing

For design firm Chris Kay International, in Station Road, has announced it will be making the numbers and letters for imprinting on to the official kit of the England captain's new club, Real Madrid.

Football fans are eager to find out what position the celebrity footballer will be playing at the glamorous Spanish club

There is little doubt he will not have the number seven - his Manchester United number - on his back, as that is currently held by Spanish wonder Raul, who has a clause in his contract dictacting that he wear the shirt while a Madrid player.

But centre forward Ronaldo has already said he will be happy to give up his number 11 jersey.

The designs for the players' and replica shirts will be made in Witham and then distributed worldwide to be put on the shirts.

They will not only be proudly displayed on the team's kit but on the official replica kits, for the Adidas-Real Madrid collection for the 2003-04 season.

Anthony Barnett, press and communications director for Chris Kay International, said although the company would be among the first people to know Beckham's new number at Real Madrid, staff had no idea what it was yet.

Chris Kay International's 20-strong design team is based in Witham, while manufacturing takes place at a plant in Kinsale in the Republic of Ireland.
