There was a fair amount of success for local golfers when the Essex Seniors Championship was staged at Chelmsford.
Overall winner for the Chelmsford Challenge Cup was Colchester's Alan Macnaught with 145. Ray Rantell was runner-up on 149 with previous winner Brian Dick (Thorpe Hall) best local man on 151 -- being beaten for third place on countback by Tommy Dods (Chigwell).
Dick was runner-up with net 143 behind Brian Davies (Royal Epping Forest) in the over-65 age group.
There was a special prize to Boyce Hillss Bernard Brown for winning the over-70 age group with 142.
Over-55 went to David Askew (Crondon Park, Billericay) on 137, while the honours in over-50 went to Orsett with Bob Page (141) winning from Ronald Wilkes (146).
Essex lost 7.5-4.5 to Middlesex at Wanstead in ther South Eastern League (northern section) contest after star player Andrew Fells was taken ill following five holes of the morning foursomes.
Essex were three down at lunch and, although they won four of the first five singles, they were beaten in the end.
In the Essex Associates Meeting at Burnham-on-Crouch for the Woodman Trophy, Orsett's David Kelly posted 43 Stableford points and finished runner-up to Peter Berry (Risebridge), who finished on 46.
