Southend United boss Steve Wignall was impressed with his players on their return to pre-season training.
The Shrimpers reported back to their Boots and Laces training camp yesterday and were put through their paces by Wignall and head coach Stewart Robson.
And Wignall said: "It was a very good first day and all the players looked really fit.
"We gave them a programme to use at home over the summer and I'm pleased to say they have stuck to it.
"Coming back for pre-season training is the day I have been waiting for ever since I joined the club as manager in Easter.
"I couldn't wait for last season to get out of the way, but this is a fresh start and it was nice to get away from the desk and get back on the training pitch.
"The players were put through a series of endurance tests on their return and even though it was hard for them there was a very good atmosphere around the place.
"We will get the footballs out today and add a bit of variety to the programme, but I'm expecting the players to feel a bit stiff over the next few days."
Wignall confirmed that trialist midfield trio, Craig Strachan, Roberts Betts and Darren Hockenhull, had all reported for training.
Former Cardiff City and Welsh Under-21 goalkeeper Lee Kendall is set to link-up with the Shrimpers during the next couple of days.
